How To Pray
Text: Luke 11:1-4 IBCSS July 11, 2004
Preacher: Pastor Jose B. Cabajar

How to pray is a relevant subject not to be taken lightly, but seriously. On the other side, it is an important topic as “How not to become the devil’s prey.”

The early disciples of the Lord realized the value of prayers that is why they were willing to be taught how to pray. John the Baptist was a godly man who knew the advantage of being a prayerful servant of God. He also taught his disciples to pray.

Praying must not be a neglected activity and a forgotten part of every believer’s life. A believer who wants to learn how to pray is a believer who really desires to get closer to God. Without praying, no believer could establish a deeper communion with God. A believer who does not pray will surely become the devil’s prey.

We are now living in a very critical time and the worst is yet to come. The expected impact of ungodliness should trigger every Christian to really learn how to pray.

(I) A Great Need Of Every Believer
    Luke 11:1
-Every believer must realize the importance of right praying

In verse 1, the Bible gives us an indication that the prayer life of our Lord Jesus stirred the heart of one of His disciples to realize the importance of prayer. The Lord Jesus exemplified an excellent prayer life. Asking the Lord to teach them to pray was a pure expression of one’s desire to learn more from the Master.

(II) Believers Must Teach Others How To Pray
     Luke 11:1
     -John taught his disciples
     -The Lord taught His disciples

Teaching others how to pray is a great privilege and responsibility of a maturing Christian. As an example, John the Baptist taught his followers, and the Lord taught His early disciples how to pray. May we also see the spiritual needs of others and be willing to impart spiritual knowledge to them so we could be instrumental to their spiritual growth.

(III) Believers Must Consider The Model Prayer
      Luke 11:2-4 Matthew 6:9-13
      -Pray to our Heavenly Father
      -Pray for His will
-Pray for the coming of His Kingdom
      -Pray for daily needs
      -Pray for forgiveness of sins
-Pray for the leading of the Lord
      -Pray for deliverance from evil

The model prayer reminds us of many things. It assures us that our Heavenly Father hears and answers our prayers. His blessed will must be prayed for. It makes us aware of His coming kingdom. It also reminds us not to worry concerning our basic needs, but to have faith in the Lord. The Lord supplies the needs of those who seek God first.

The model prayer leads us to pray for forgiveness of our sins. In Matthew 6:14-15, the Lord also reminds His disciples the blessing of forgiving others’ trespasses. In the last part of Luke 11:4, the Lord wants us to recognize His power to lead and power to save people from evil. Truly, God is omnipotent. Matthew 6:13 reminds us to acknowledge His eternal power.

Learning from the Bible how to pray is a pivotal point for every believer to advance spiritually. Be a man of prayer and experience the marvelous working of the Lord. Teach others to pray and be a blessing to them.
